The Lockdown Alphabet: C is for Create Common Cultures
Original letterpress and linocut print. Part of The Lockdown Alphabet, an artwork conceived and created during Aotearoa’s Coronavirus lockdown. The Lockdown Alphabet comments on the virus and surrounding issues and is on show at Mahara Gallery during September 2020.
Each of the 28 prints (26 letters plus coversheet (!) and ampersand (&)) features a letter, a phrase and has accompanying commentary (shipped seperately with the print).
During lockdown, printmaker Joe Buchanan cut giant 600 pt Franklin Gothic Demi by hand into linoleum. The letters were then hand printed with complementary metal type onto beautiful Fabriano Rosaspina white printmaking paper, paper size approx 295 mm x 420 mm (roughly A3). Only 30 copies of each letter will ever be made.

C, Create common cultures
Faced with global threats: pandemics, climate change, nuclear weapons, survival requires agreement. The facts and solutions are painfully obvious. But narrow nationalist posturing still wins political power.
