Also known as Virtue Rewarded, Pamela tells the story of young maid who withstood the sexual advances of her master, Mr. B. It is, in many ways, an early feminist work that empowers women’s ability to make decisions for themselves. As Mr. B. continues to cook up one scheme after another to attempt to seduce Pamela, she continues to refuse him until he agrees to real marriage terms that elevate Pamela’s status from that of a maiden to that of a prominent figure in society. It is a story of love, coercion, and female empowerment that is centuries ahead of its time.

When the story was first published, it was actually mocked and heavily satirized by many different authors. At the time, people felt as though it took too many liberties with its sexually charged content. Shamela by Henry Fielding is one such example. Interestingly, Pamela was first conceived by Richardson as a conduct book, or instruction manual for how to behave accordingly at the time. As the work evolved, it gradually took on a storyteller’s style that fit well with the increasingly popular novel format. The intent wasn’t just to tell people how to act properly. It was to entertain and instruct at the same time.

Since its publication, Pamela has been taken to the stage, film, T.V. and even radio shows. All in all, Pamela clearly demonstrates feminist ideas that eighteenth century society may not have been ready to accept. It is a worthwhile historical read in that regard.
