Aston Greathead was a 20th-century New Zealander landscape painter. His stark, colourful, naturalistic paintings of the mountainous New Zealand landscape often feature snow-capped peaks and cerulean blue skies.
Notably, Greathead’s paintings were produced through a technique derived from his early career in commercial sign-painting, using three primary colours plus black and the white of the canvas, resulting in relatively quick paintings that retain a bold, graphic aesthetic.
Born on May 31, 1921, he was self-taught and went into the business of signwriting in Timaru before participating in the New Zealand military during World War II.
Returning home, he won the 1966 Sir Henry Kelliher’s Dawson Hallmark watercolour award brought the artist newfound recognition and acclaim.
Greathead died on July 18, 2012, in Blenheim, New Zealand.
Medium: Acrylic on stretched canvas.
